Sandal season is the real test of a closet. Winter forgives a lot — tall boots do most of the work, tights cover the rest. Summer doesn't. Every outfit in June and July is built around a shoe the eye goes to first, and a bad pair ruins the look faster than a bad bag. Good sandals aren't a luxury in summer. They're the foundation.
2026 is shaping up to be one of the stronger sandal years in recent memory. The fisherman silhouette — woven, caged, with enough structure to look intentional — is the shape you'll see repeated on every trend list from Copenhagen to Capri. Transparent straps, metallic flats, and chunky-sole platforms are all having legitimate moments. And — quietly, and with better proportions than the last time around — the wedge is back.
Below are fourteen sandals and wedges worth buying this summer, organized by silhouette so you can skip to the shape that fits your July. Browse our full summer shoe lineup here.
A quick note on how we picked: shape, versatility, construction, price-to-wear ratio. We favored shoes you'll wear three times a week through September, not once at a wedding.

How to choose a summer sandal in 2026
Three things worth knowing before the list.
Toe shape matters more than color. Square-toe and round-toe are leading 2026; pointed-toe sandals have quietly slipped off the radar. If you're between silhouettes, go square — it reads modern, plays well with both tailoring and slip dresses, and photographs sharp.
Height is a lifestyle choice. A flat sandal is a weekday move. A block heel is a restaurant move. A stiletto is a wedding move. A wedge is an all-day move that splits the difference. Most summer wardrobes need two of these — not all four.
Material = formality. Leather reads polished. Raffia and cork read relaxed. Metallic reads evening. Jeweled reads resort. Match the material to where the shoe is going, not just how it looks in the photo.
Flat & low-heel sandals
The flat sandal is your most-worn summer shoe, full stop. Beach, farmers market, dinners that don't warrant a heel, the walk from the car to the restaurant on an otherwise tailored night. 2026's flat sandals run more structured than the barely-there styles of 2021–2023 — think woven, buckled, caged.
1. Prologue Felip — Black Strappy Low Heel Sandal
A caged low-heel sandal in smooth black — a modern fisherman silhouette done with a barely-there heel that lifts the foot just enough to elongate the leg. This is the trend shoe of 2026, made walkable. Wear with cropped straight-leg jeans, a linen midi, or a tailored short. Available in red, off-white, black, and brown — the off-white is the strongest summer pick. Shop Felip.

2. Prologue Blob — Black Gold Buckle Sandal
Double-buckle flat slide with statement gold hardware. The Birkenstock Arizona silhouette, reimagined with sharper proportions and a polished buckle — better for anyone who loves the shape but wants something that crosses over from the beach to a restaurant. Wear with denim shorts, midi skirts, anything linen. Shop Blob.
3. Prologue CHER — Black Braided Strap Sandal
A braided-strap flat sandal in a warm black — the "bought on a trip to Santorini" energy without the trip. The braiding has a boho hand-feel that reads elevated, not costume. Particularly good with white linen, oat-colored knits, and anything flowing. Shop CHER.
4. Ancient Greek Sandals Ikaria
The reference point for the Grecian flat sandal — t-strap, minimal upper, impeccable leather. Made in Greece, built to last five summers. Worth it if you'll wear a flat leather sandal more than twice a week; overkill if you rotate multiple pairs.
5. Birkenstock Arizona Big Buckle
The Birkenstock most shoppers default to — updated with a chunkier buckle than the original Arizona. Comfort is unmatched at the price; aesthetics have earned their way back into fashion. A fine entry-level slide if you don't want the Blob.
Block-heel sandals
The block-heel sandal is the grown-up's summer shoe. 2–3 inches of height, a stable sole, wearable for a full evening. This is where wedding season lives.
6. Prologue Elara — Black Transparent Strap Sandal
A block-heel sandal with transparent PVC straps over a black footbed — one of the strongest trend-forward picks in our lineup. The transparent straps photograph cleaner than most sandals because they disappear against the skin, elongating the leg. Available in beige, black, white, and orange; black is the most versatile, orange the most editorial. Shop Elara.

7. Prologue Heas — Ivory Platform Sandal
A slightly chunky block-heel sandal in soft ivory — one of our best wedding-guest picks. The platform adds height without adding pain (a true stiletto stops being fun at hour three; this doesn't). Available in five colors; ivory and silver are the strongest. Shop Heas.
8. Steve Madden Tinna
The mid-tier reference for a clean block-heel summer sandal. Wide color range, reliable fit, well-reviewed. Good if you want a second block-heel in a shade ours doesn't cover.
Strappy & dressy heeled sandals
For dinners, weddings, and the occasional shoe-forward outfit. A good dressy sandal does what a stiletto pump does — only barefoot.
9. Prologue Gibson — Black Square-Toe Stiletto Sandal
A strappy stiletto sandal in smooth black with a square toe — the most shoe-forward sandal we make. The square toe dates less than a pointed toe, and the thin-strap construction means it reads almost invisible on the foot. Wear with a slip dress, a tailored jumpsuit, or any midi that wants to look taller. Available in brown, black, burgundy, and beige. Shop Gibson.

10. Stuart Weitzman Nudist
The reference point for the strappy evening sandal. Minimal upper, clean ankle strap, impeccable construction. Worth it if you'll wear them to three events a year. Too much shoe for occasional use.
Wedges
The wedge is the most-returned, most-underrated shoe in summer footwear. People swore off wedges around 2016 and haven't looked back — a mistake. The 2026 wedge is slimmer, sharper, and more proportional than the cork-and-canvas version that killed the category a decade ago. When a wedge is good, it's the most comfortable elevated shoe in a closet.
11. Prologue Aniel — Beige Platform Wedge Sandal
Woven t-bar platform wedge in a warm beige — a modern fisherman silhouette set on a clean platform wedge base. The t-bar lifts the look out of "resort wedge" territory and into editorial. Available in beige, black, gold, brown, leopard, and burgundy; the leopard and burgundy are the strongest fashion picks, the beige the most wearable. Shop Aniel.
12. Prologue DION — Brown Raffia Seashell Wedge Mules
A raffia-wrapped wedge mule with small seashell detailing on the vamp — a piece of actual summer jewelry, as a shoe. This is the pair to buy if you're going somewhere with sand. The raffia construction is genuinely warm-weather-appropriate (no leather sticking to your foot in August), and the seashell detail photographs like a vacation postcard. Most slept-on shoe in our catalog. Shop DION.

13. Marc Fisher Nell
The reliable mid-tier cork-platform wedge — an updated take on the espadrille-adjacent classic. Good construction, wide width range, decent color options each season. Worth a look if you want a traditional wedge at a lower spend.
Statement slides & mules
For when you want the shoe to carry the outfit — party-adjacent summer, rooftops, anywhere an otherwise-plain look needs amplification.
14. Prologue Evans — Gold Jeweled Platform Sandal
Chunky platform slide with oversized jewel embellishments across twin straps — the Bottega-adjacent statement pick in our lineup. The platform is thick enough to read intentional; the jewels are faceted enough to catch light in photographs. Wear with an otherwise-plain outfit — white linen, black slip dress, cream trousers — and let the sandal do all the work. Available in gold, silver, and black. Shop Evans.
How sandals should fit
Sandal fit is mostly about the straps. The vamp strap should sit flush across your foot without digging in — if it creates a crease above the toe knuckles, the strap is too short and the sandal will hurt in under an hour. Your longest toe should stop 2–4mm from the front edge of the footbed (you don't want the toe hanging off, but you also don't want it pressed against the edge). Heel strap should hold the foot without creating a red line.
A quick rule: wedges and platforms tend to run true, sometimes slightly large. Strappy stilettos run true. Leather flats and slides stretch slightly over the first 2–3 wears — size down a half if you're between sizes in smooth leather; stay true in vegan leather, raffia, and cork (which don't stretch).
If you're shopping for a beach trip specifically, size up a quarter — feet swell in heat, and a sandal that fits perfectly in an April fitting room will feel tight by noon on a 90-degree day.
Three outfit formulas for summer sandals in 2026
Everyday summer. Straight-leg light denim, a cropped white tank or linen tee, a small leather bag, and a fisherman-style flat sandal. The uniform of anyone under 40 who's been paying attention to the last three fashion weeks. Works for coffee runs, weekend errands, casual lunches — anything that doesn't need to clear a dress code.
Dinner or wedding guest. A slip dress in ivory, black, or cream, a lightweight blazer, a strappy square-toe stiletto sandal, small gold jewelry. The block-heel or wedge swap-in also works if you're dancing. The trick is the toe: square reads modern, pointed reads 2019.
Vacation uniform. A linen set in oat or cream, a straw bag, a raffia or cork wedge, a silk scarf or head wrap optional. The shoe is the whole outfit's tonal anchor — raffia reads resort, metallic reads poolside, braided leather reads island.
The Prologue line, start to finish
If you made it this far and you're ready to shop, here's the short version. Everything Prologue makes is vegan — we use vegan leather and faux suede, nothing from an animal — but that's not why most of our customers buy from us. They buy from us because the sandal they wanted from Steve Madden or Sam Edelman costs meaningfully less here and looks the same in the photo and on the foot.
Summer is the single best season to test that theory. Browse the full sandal & wedge lineup and see for yourself.
